God, I need to find a belly dancing class that I can afford. I have a book and dvd set, but its not the same as a teacher. I’ve got a few moves down fairly well, like hip rolls and such, but I want to really learn.

    Hello Wendy

A *long* time ago when I lived in Manhattan (before I moved to Civilisation aka Maui) the belly dance scene was centred on 8th Avenue in the upper 20s. Most enjoyable. The girls were beautiful and full of sexual fire. I still remember one who danced under the name of Zefrana, who turned out to be a Jewish ballet dancer from Brooklyn! The dance was Turkish style rather than Egyptian (which is more common on the Left Coast). Turkish style is my fave. Amazing rhythms in 5-time, 7-time, 9-time, 11-time and 13-time. The music was live, performed by some of the best Turkish musicians, who found they could make much better money in NY than in Istanbul. There was, of course, a really good drummer playing the dumbek, because rhythm is critical to support the dancers, together with a zither, clarinet, and violin. All that for the price of a couple of ouzos. I wonder whether that scene still exists.

I love ogling nearly naked belly dancers…

    Yrs in pervery, Adrian

I have a friend who teaches in the city and is _amazing_. I don’t think her classes are that expensive, either. Let me know if you want the info.

Shakira has a few movements, but she’s a little lacking in power, and she sticks out her behind too much. This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKKY53HPTc4&feature=related is Willow, performing at Rakkasah East. She of no bones and great strength and power. Willow is a friend, and teaches in the Mid-Hudson valley.

Note that in this video, it’s completely improv – Willow doesn’t know ahead of time what the band will play. Near the end, when she appears to be talking to them, she’s asking for a drum solo.

If you are interested in BD, you should check out Rakkasah (http://www.rakkasah.com/) the big gatherings on the east and west coasts every spring and fall. It ends with three days of one-after-another dancers. Guaranteed you can connect with an instructor in the bazaar, and get some great deals on costume pieces and jewelery.

Oooo Ooooo – also search YouTube for “Autumn Ward”! She’s more eclectic, and everything she does is beautiful! (She’s in NYC.)
