It is Friday, I have links

April 25th, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve found some excellent links the past few days, along with a few old favourites.

I’ve been playing with del.icio.us!

How to Deal with Negative CommentsGala Darling, for Pro Blogger.

“A good rule of thumb is that nasty or negative comments are never about you or what you’ve written, they are always about the person who wrote them. (Even if people disagree with what you’ve said, most of them can do it in a sane & respectful fashion.)”

You know, I really like Gala Darling. She’s sassy. How many people can actually be described as sassy?

Clueless in America - via the New York Times

These and so many other issues of crucial national importance require an educated populace if they are to be dealt with effectively. At the moment we are not even coming close to equipping the population with the intellectual tools that are needed.

In the Common Core survey, nearly 20 percent of respondents did not know who the U.S. fought in World War II.

WHAT THE FUCK?! How can twenty percent of the people who respond to a survey not know who we fought in World War Two? HOW?

“Pay no attention to the man behind that curtain.” Ignore what other people are doing. It has no bearing on your existence or vision of the world. The times we feel the most discouraged are usually due to the fact we are comparing ourselves to others. Most times reading awards annuals, and industry mags only serves to make us feel inadequate. Try cutting it out entirely. Designer Bruce Mau recommends not entering awards competitions. His reasoning, “Just don’t do it, it’s not good for you.”

27 Thoughts On Blogging For The Artist – Robert Bruce

If you’re spending more time on Twitter than on your novel/painting/film/poem/play/sculpture, you’re dead.

The Commuter Threat – Still Drinking (This guy’s blog makes me want to make out with him.)

For weeks now, I’ve been trying to think of a way to write about how much certain New York subway commuters piss me off without sounding whiny. No small task. But today, I realized something: these people constitute a threat to our national security, and it is in fact my duty to identify them and assign a colorful threat level to each. I’ve selected the worst of them and provided a description, along with an explanation of how they threaten free peoples of the world and a palette of hues that best reflect their terrorist intentions.

Lost Films

This is a photo website. The man who runs it searches for old film in old cameras to develop, and see what sort of photos were on the film. Its a very interesting project, and looking at the photos of people and places from the past, with no frame of reference, is quite fun. This site is an old favourite of mine, which came to me by way of the Morbid Fact Du Jour mailing list, from the Asylum Eclectica.
