Sex Camp 2008: Signage

September 28th, 2008 · 4 Comments

One of the wonderful things about sex camp is the fact that everything, for the most part, is gender neutral. All bathrooms and showers are co-ed, with the exception of cabins that are all male or all female (and for the most part, the definition of male and female at camp don’t usually require the ‘correct’ chromosomes.)

Anyway, it isn’t like there are urinals or big poo troughs. Each toilet is in a stall, as are the showers (Though its a shame they don’t have big gym showers. That would rock!)

So, everyone can find their comfort zone with toilets.

However, I noticed something I found kind of funny.

There is one place in camp where the bathrooms are labeled – by the pool.

I noticed that with out thinking, I immediately walked into the door marked “Ladies”. I did this last year too, and all this year, and I didn’t even realize it until we were on the way home.  I never once saw anyone who identified as male in that toilet. I can only assume they went to the next door.

I thought about why I automatically went to the ‘ladie’s room’. I though, at first, it was because it was simply closer than the ‘men’s room’, and I was going to the first place.

But I never saw a dude wander in there, and you’d think they would if it was the closer toilets. But I’m pretty sure I did see some guys leaving the ‘men’s room’.

Its just an observation. I’m not trying to draw any conclusions. But this would be a great topic for a gender studies or cultural anthropology class. Why, in such an open environment, do we default back to the ‘norm’ when we’re first presented it in, while still within that other environment?

Ummm, Wendy? Yeah, I went to that bathroom because I wanted to poo in the most private place possible! No men, and sometimes no women!

Lol, I didn’t even think of that. I can poo anywhere, so having people around wasn’t an issue for me. I only ever went there when I was near the pool or at dinner.

    You can poo anywhere?

    I’m jealous. Sighhh.
